Satisfied with the ICC Executive Council meeting

Press release Nuuk, January 16, 2015

January 15, 2015 was the last day of meetings for the Inuit Circumpolar Council (ICC) Executive Council. During the three days of the meeting the delegation of tasks between the regional offices in Alaska, Canada, Chukotka and Greenland has been established.

ICC-Greenland's President Hjalmar Dahl expresses his satisfaction with the meeting proceeding, and is particularly pleased with the work that ICC-Greenland must lift in the next four years. ICC-Greenland has always had the UN work as a core area. This will also be the case for the next four years. The UN work will be especially concentrated around the three mandate areas concerning indigenous peoples' rights, which is the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, the UN Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

In the Arctic Council and several of its working groups ICC will also continue to lift a series of work areas within e.g. areas such as sustainable development and different areas dealing with pollution and a healthier environment for the Arctic peoples. Furthermore, ICC-Greenland continues its participation in working groups on language and culture.

The ICC leadership has, in addition to the delegation of work tasks, prioritized the planning of two major conferences:

  • A Circumpolar Inuit Economic Summit to examine potential partners among Inuit businesses and promote their opportunities for knowledge sharing, and
  • An Inuit Summit about resource management, where there will be a focus on the best opportunities for Inuit food security and self-sufficiency.

After the internal meetings of the ICC, the Executive Council met with the Premier of Naalakkersuisut, Kim Kielsen, to inform him about the general work of the organization, the outcome document of the general assembly and the strategic objectives for the next four years, including the two above mentioned conferences.

The next meeting of the ICC Executive Council will be in August in Bethel, Alaska.
