January 3, 2011: New address for ICC Greenland
ICC Greenland (and thereby the ICC Head Office) moves from the old building at Dronning Ingridsvej 1 to a new location at Aqqusinersuaq 3, on the first floor above Greenland Travel, right in the city centre of Nuuk. The INUIT sign will now be visible for lots of people in the busy shopping area.
January 6, 2011: New employee
Inuit Circumpolar Council welcomes a new employee, Parnuna Egede, as an Advisor on Environmental Issues with minimum a half year position. She is a biologist, and will be assisting with Arctic Council work, environmental and climate projects, hearing answers regarding new resource development legislation, work with the website and newsletter etc.
February 11, 2011: Delegation meeting
The half-yearly Greenland Delegation meeting is held in Nuuk with the participation of 15 organisations. Advisory groups and other working groups are established to facilitate the goals of ICC Greenland.
April 1, 2011: Promotion to Executive Director
Sara Olsvig, former Coordinator on Human Rights Issues, is now appointed the title of Executive Director, with a greater responsibility for the overall policy level work of ICC Greenland.
May 11, 2011: Declaration on Resource Development Principles
Inuit leaders from Chukotka (Russia), Alaska (US), Canada and Greenland met in Ottawa in February to discuss the issues of Oil and Gas Exploration and Exploitation in the Arctic, Mining and Impact Assessments. The Summit resulted in ”A Circumpolar Inuit Declaration on Resource Development Principles in Inuit Nunaat”.
May 12, 2011: Statement to Arctic Council Ministerial Meeting
”In the future we hope the Arctic states and Permanent Participants can become equals in the working and decision-making processes and further strengthen the Council”, he said.
May 19, 2011: ICC at Permanemt Forum
Inuit Circumpolar Council, ICC, is participating again this year at the tenth session of UN Permanent Forum in New York. Aqqaluk Lynge, the Chair of ICC and Sara Olsvig, Executive Director of the ICC Head Office is attending the first week, while Hjalmar Dahl, Executive Council member attend the second week. In addition Kirt Ejesiak, ICC Canada and Tatiana Achirgina, ICC Chukotka are attending as well.
May 19, 2011: Rights of Indigenous Peoples acknowledged
På fjerdedagen af FN's Permanent Forums tiende session drejede debatten sig om implementeringen af FN's Erklæring om oprindelige folks rettigheder og om hvilke lande der nu går ind for erklæringen. Det konstateredes at de allerfleste lande nu tilslutter sig den, med den beklagelige undtagelse af Rusland.
May 29, 2011: World conference on Indigenous Peoples
Under mødet for FN’s Permanent Forum for Sager vedrørende Oprindelige Folk, blev det bekræftet at FN afholder Verdenskonference om Oprindelige Folk i 2014. Permanent Forum, som afholdt 2 ugers møde, sluttede fredag den 27. maj og behandlede sager vedrørende oprindelige folk.
August 19, 2011: Oil Spill Prevention and Contingency Plan released
The Greenland Government has released the Oil Spill Prevention and Contingency Plan on August 15.
October 1, 2011: Sara Olsvig on leave
Sara Olsvig has been elected to the Danish Parliament and is thus on leave from ICC Greenland from September 15
November 3, 2011: Inuit represented at mercury negotiations in Kenya
Inuit represented in Kenya at the third session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee to prepare a global legally binding instrument on Mercury.
November 25, 2011: Open position as Executive Director
Den oplagte kandidat til stillingen som ICC’s administrerende direktør har en akademisk grad indenfor et relevant fagområde samt nogle års praktisk erfaring i arbejdet med grønlandske og arktiske spørgsmål, såsom oprindelige folks rettigheder, fornyelige og ikke-fornyelige ressourcer, traditionel viden, klimaændringer, udviklingsarbejde og ledelse.
November 13, 2011: Arctic Council Senior Arctic Officials meeting
The Arctic Council Senior Arctic Officials meeting in the days of November 8-9 in Luleå in northern Sweden has recently ended. From ICC we are very satisfied with the support for our proposals, says Carl Christian Olsen, President for ICC Greenland.
December 7, 2011: Lack of consensus at mercury negotiations
Den tredje ud af fem planlagte forhandlingsrunder repræsenterede et midtvejspunkt, og derfor var der mange forventninger. Men det er ikke altid let at gøre fremskridt, når så mange lande med vidt forskellige indstillinger og interesser skal finde fælles grund. På nogle områder var der stor succes med at opnå enighed om teksten, men på nogle af de vigtigste områder viste kløfterne sig at være for massive til at opnå konsensus.
