Message from the President of ICC-Greenland

Welcome to the web site of the Inuit Circumpolar Council (ICC) located in the capital of Greenland, Nuuk.

The Inuit Circumpolar Council represents the Inuit, the Arctic people living on top of the planet, living across the North American continent and the eastern tip of the Russian Arctic regions; from Greenland in the East, through the Canadian Arctic, Alaska to Chukotka in the West.

Our ancestors have lived in these vast regions for thousands of years, adapting to one of the most severe climates of the planet, living off the resources that nature could supply. Although we have been divided by political boundaries, we share the same vision through the Inuit Circumpolar Council.

The Inuit Circumpolar Council have played a crucial role in asserting the interests of both the Inuit people, as well as the interests of other indigenous peoples world-wide in its 20 year history. On this website you will learn about our goals and activities as an organisation. The Inuit Circumpolar Council is a non-governmental organization (NGO), which holds consultative status to the United Nations Economic and Social Council, (ECOSOC), besides being involved in many areas in the various international fora.

The guidance and mandates to the Inuit Circumpolar Council President and Executive Council are given by the Inuit delegates at the General Assembly who meet from the four different Arctic nations every 4 years. The last General Assembly was the 8th General Assembly of the ICC which was held in Nuuk, Greenland July 1998. You will be able to see and read about the highlights of this Pan-Arctic meeting of the Inuit on the following pages.

We are presently at the construction stage of the structure of this home page. In the time to come you will have access to more written and visual information. Should you have any questions or comments, you are most welcome to contact us.
